Taking into account the tourism prospects of the area, Punnayoorkkulam Panchayat was included in the PEPPER project of RT Mission in 2018. Special Tourism Gramasabhas were conducted to further explore the tourism potential of the Panchayat and ensure effective participation of the local community in the planning and execution of tourism schemes.

On mapping the resources and formulating the Tourism resources directory of the Panchayat, the potential destinations were identified and tourism packages designed. Sustainable tourism initiatives have a significant impact on the integral development of the local community. Hence, by analysing the tourism potential of the village, the Panchayat has incorporated various projects for Responsible Tourism in their proposal to the Central Government under Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM).

Of the amount sanctioned under the scheme, about 50 lakhs was allocated to Responsible Tourism activities. Following an agreement between the Grama Panchayat and RT Mission, the amount was handed over to RT Mission to implement the RT activities in the Panchayat. The Panchayat administration of 2016-20 carried out this initiative.
