Modern education was first started in Punnayoorkkulam in 1892. The social reforms and other movements that were conducted during the independence struggle have greatly influenced the field of education in Punnayoorkkulam panchayat. Hindu elementary school was first established in Puzhikala in 1892. This was the first school to be built in the Panchayat. It was later named as Ramaraja School.
Before Independence, the students would carry sand in a holder and palm leaves to the school. They would begin their learning by writing letters on the sand with their index finger. The letters were also written in the palm fronds. This used to be the system then.
The popular rural library that functioned at Attupuram had greatly contributed to the field of education. Hindu elementary school was first established in Puzhikala in 1892. This was the first school to be built in the panchayat. It was later named Ramaraja School. Over the years, the number of educational institutions in the panchayat increased. With the efforts of the Malabar district board, Parur elementary school, the primary school at Chemmannur, Punnayoorkkulam GMLP School, the primary school that was run at Kadikkad were all established before Independence. Kadikkad government high school was formed in 1993.
The reading rooms and clubs of land are indicators of its social life. There are 24 clubs and five reading rooms distributed among all the wards of Punnayoorkkulam, and they steer all the activities related to arts, sports and culture in the region. There are Anganawadis in all the wards of the panchayat through which child welfare projects get implemented. The oldest school in the panchayat is the LP School at Andathode.
